If you played pro hockey long enough, you've probably sent some version of this text:
"You know anyone who's played there?"
I know I did.
An opportunity comes up with a team or league you don't know much about and suddenly you're texting former teammates, calling guys you played with three years ago, asking your agent, or trying to find someone who knows someone.
What's the coach like?
Do they treat guys well?
Do they pay on time?
How are the facilities?
What's the city like?
Is it a good place for a family?
What are the imports getting?
The contract tells you one part of the story. It doesn't tell you what it's actually like to play there.
For a long time, that information has lived almost entirely between players.
That's why we're excited to partner with Hockey Contracts.
Hockey Contracts is taking the information players have always shared behind the scenes and putting it into one place. Players can anonymously review teams they've played for and give other pros real insight into the organization, team culture, management, facilities, travel, salary and benefits, quality of life, and more.
They've also built resources to help players navigate the business side of the game, from understanding contracts and benefits to researching leagues, import rules, career pathways, and what to consider before moving to another country.
At Free Agent, we talk a lot about athletes helping athletes.
Usually that's about careers, introductions, opportunities, and life outside of sport.
This partnership brings that same idea back onto the ice.
If you've played somewhere, share what you know. If you're considering your next move, learn from the guys who were there before you.
That's how the hockey world has always worked.
Now there's a place built for it.
