Picture an exclusive room full of athletes who already work in the industry you're thinking about. You can ask them how they got there. You can read what they've learned. You can send a message to the one whose path looks closest to yours.
That's the idea behind Locker Rooms, they are industry-focused private communities where verified current and former athletes discover people, ask questions, share insight and opportunities, and build relationships across sports and generations. They're live for members now.
This guide covers what a Locker Room is, how to join one, what you can do inside, and how to get real value from it.
Why We Built Them
Many athletes leave sport with a wide circle of people and few contacts in the industry they're moving into. The people who could answer your questions might be one conversation away, but it's hard to know who they are or how to reach them.
Locker Rooms are built around three goals. Get access to an exclusive network of athletes by industry. Give athletes a place to ask and answer practical questions. And help athletes build lasting relationships, from networking to mentoring, over time.
Who Locker Rooms Are For
Locker Rooms are for verified Free Agent athletes at any stage, and what you get from a room depends on where you are.
If you're exploring a field. You can preview rooms, see who's in them, and find experienced athletes to learn from before you commit to anything. Asking a question in a room is a low-pressure way to hear from people who have done the work.
If you're working in a field. You can share what you're learning and post opportunities. Most people find that explaining something to someone else sharpens their own understanding.
If you've been in a field for a while. You can answer questions and welcome people who are new to it. Even a short reply can save someone weeks of guessing.
How to Join a Locker Room
Find a room. Locker Rooms has its own place in the main navigation. You'll see the rooms you've joined, rooms recommended for you, and every room that's open. You can also search by room name or industry.
Look before you join. Open a room to read itsguides and suggested topics, and see who's in it. Some content, such as trending posts, stays hidden until you join.
Join and pick a status. When you join, you choose a room status: Exploring, Working, or Experienced. In general, Exploring means you're still looking into the field, Working means you're in it now, and Experienced means you've been in it a while and can help others. Pick the one that matches where you are.
Decide whether to be Open to Helping. This is an optional badge, and it's off by default. It tells other members you're happy to answer questions in that room.
Introduce yourself if you want to. You'll be offered a suggested introduction. You can edit it or skip it. It's never posted automatically.
After that, you can post, comment, react, and message other members. You can join as many rooms as you like, and you can leave any room at any time.
Only verified athletes can join, so everyone in a room has been checked.
What You'll Find Inside a Room
Every post has a type, so it's easy to find what you need.
Discussion. Open conversation about the industry.
Question. Something you want answered. If you ask one, you can mark it Answered when you have what you need, and reopen it if you want more. Comments stay open either way.
Advice or Insight. Something you've learned that could help someone else.
Opportunity. A role, an introduction, or a lead.
You can filter the feed by post type and sort it by most recent or most active. Pinned posts stay at the top. You can write text and add images, video, and attachments. And you can like, comment, reply, @mention other members, and share. Each room also has tabs for Posts, Media, About, Guides, and Pinned.
Find the Right People
Each room has a member directory. Every card shows a person's name, photo, sport, title, company, and location if they've chosen to share it. It also shows their room status and any badges. You can search and filter the list, including by Captains and by who is Open to Helping. Captains appear at the top.
Your own card is built from your Free Agent profile, so it helps to keep your sport, title, and company up to date. When someone is deciding whether to reply to a message, that card is what they see first.
When you find someone whose path interests you, you can message them through Free Agent's messaging, under the same rules as anywhere else on the platform. A short, specific message works best. Say who you are, what you're curious about, and what you'd like to ask.
Captains and Moderation
Each room has captains, who are appointed by Free Agent's team. Captains help keep their room useful. They start discussions, welcome new members, pin helpful posts, and review reports. They can remove posts in their own room.
There are limits. Captains can't remove members, see private messages, or moderate across rooms. Free Agent's team handles member removal and platform-wide moderation. And you can report a post if something doesn't belong.
A quick note on the word. Room captain is a role in that room. It's separate from anything else at Free Agent with a similar name.
You Stay in Control
Locker Rooms is built to avoid noise. You'll get notifications for likes, comments, replies, @mentions, content removal, the outcome of a room request, and invitations. You won't get an alert for every new post or every new member.
Invitations to a room never join you automatically. You decide. And on your profile, you can add your current industry and the industries you're interested in. Both are optional.
If your industry isn't covered, you can ask for a new room. The Free Agent team reviews each request.
What Locker Rooms Are Not
A Locker Room isn't a job board, and Open to Helping isn't a formal mentorship. It's a badge that says someone is willing to answer questions. It isn't a promise of a reply or a commitment to guide you.
Locker Rooms are a place to meet people and ask questions. What grows from that depends on the people in the room.
Open Locker Rooms
If you're a verified Free Agent member, look for Locker Rooms in the main navigation and join a room that matches your field. If you're not verified yet, finishing verification is the step that opens the door.
